How to Choose a Wood Pellet Supplier: 10-Point Checklist
The ten questions every wholesale buyer should ask a wood pellet supplier before signing — from mill ownership to claims handling.
A wood pellet supplier relationship is a multi-year commitment. Get the vetting right once and quality issues largely disappear.
The 10-point checklist
- 1. Do you own or lease the pellet mill? (Ask for the deed or lease.)
- 2. What is annual production capacity and current utilisation?
- 3. Which certifications do you hold, and can I see current numbers?
- 4. What is your feedstock mix by species and origin?
- 5. How many buyers in my region can I contact as references?
- 6. Who is your third-party inspection partner at loading?
- 7. What is your fines and moisture guarantee at destination?
- 8. How are claims handled — replacement, credit, or dispute?
- 9. What payment terms do you offer? (LC, DP, open account)
- 10. Can you deliver a paid sample shipment before a full contract?
Green flag
A supplier who answers all ten without hedging, and volunteers information you didn't ask for, is nearly always the right partner. Everyone else is a maybe.
