Buying wood pellets in bulk is fundamentally different from retail purchase. Volumes are quoted in tonnes, prices move with feedstock and freight indices, and the contract — not the invoice — is where most of the money is made or lost.
Typical wholesale volumes
- 20' container: ~22 tonnes of big-bags
- 40' HC container: ~24 tonnes of 15 kg bags on pallets
- FTL truck (EU): 24 tonnes bulk
- Vessel: 3,000–15,000 tonnes handysize
Pricing components
A wholesale price should always be broken down: EXW mill price, inland freight, port handling, ocean freight, insurance, and destination clearance. Ask suppliers for a line-item quote — a lump-sum CIF number hides where you can negotiate.
Non-negotiable contract clauses
- Certification: ENplus A1/A2/B or ISO 17225-2 class
- Third-party inspection at loading (SGS, Bureau Veritas)
- Moisture ≤ 10%, fines ≤ 1% at destination
- Pre-shipment sample retention for 90 days
- Force majeure and demurrage terms
