Wood Pellet Storage: How to Keep Pellets Dry, Safe, and Sellable

Wood pellets absorb moisture fast. Warehouse humidity, stacking limits, off-gassing, and FIFO rules for wholesale pellet storage.

Wood pellets are hygroscopic — they pull moisture from the air. A well-made A1 pellet ruined by six weeks in a damp warehouse becomes a claim you can't defend.

Warehouse conditions

  • Relative humidity below 65%
  • Roof and wall integrity — no leaks, no condensation
  • Concrete floor with vapour barrier
  • No direct contact with exterior walls

Stacking limits

Big-bags: two high maximum. Pallets of 15 kg bags: three high maximum. Overstacking crushes lower bags, generates fines, and fails re-inspection.

CO off-gassing

Fresh pellets in enclosed silos emit carbon monoxide. Every enclosed storage must be ventilated and have CO monitors before human entry. This is a documented industry fatality risk.

Stock rotation

Strict FIFO. Certified pellets have a 12-month practical shelf life in dry storage; older stock is sold first or blended into industrial-grade contracts.

Buying wood pellets in bulk?
