Wood Pellet Specifications Explained: Reading a Spec Sheet
Every parameter on a wood pellet specification sheet — calorific value, ash, moisture, durability, fines — and what the numbers actually mean.
A typical wood pellet spec sheet contains 12–15 parameters. Here's what each one tells you as a buyer.
Energy and moisture
- Calorific value (NCV): ≥ 4.6 kWh/kg for A1 — heat output per kg
- Moisture: ≤ 10% — wet pellets crumble and lose energy
Ash and chemistry
- Ash content: ≤ 0.7% A1, ≤ 1.2% A2 — residue after combustion
- Ash-melting temperature: ≥ 1200°C — prevents clinker in the burner
- Chlorine: ≤ 0.02% — corrodes boiler heat exchangers
- Sulphur: ≤ 0.04% — SO₂ emissions
- Nitrogen: ≤ 0.3% — NOx emissions
Physical properties
- Diameter: 6 or 8 mm ± 1 mm
- Length: 3.15–40 mm
- Bulk density: ≥ 600 kg/m³
- Mechanical durability: ≥ 98% — resistance to breakage
- Fines: ≤ 1% at gate, ≤ 1% at delivery
