Pellet Fuel Quality Metrics Every Buyer Should Check
Ash, moisture, durability, calorific value, bulk density and fines — the six pellet fuel metrics that decide performance, and the thresholds to demand.
Every pellet analysis certificate looks similar. Knowing which six numbers actually predict performance turns that certificate from paperwork into a purchasing tool.
1. Net calorific value
The energy you buy. Demand ≥ 4.6 kWh/kg as received for premium grades. Always confirm the basis — dry-basis figures look 10 % better and mean nothing operationally.
2. Moisture
Every percentage point of moisture above 8 % costs energy twice: less fuel mass per tonne and evaporation losses in the furnace. Cap at 10 %.
3. Ash content
- ≤ 0.7 %: premium, minimal de-ashing
- 0.7–1.2 %: commercial boilers with automatic ash removal
- 1.2–3.0 %: industrial only, ash handling required
4. Mechanical durability
Measured per EN ISO 17831-1. Below 97.5 % the pellet turns to dust in transit — you paid for fuel and received sweepings.
5. Bulk density
≥ 600 kg/m³ keeps freight and silo costs sane. Low density means you ship air.
6. Fines
Fines below 1 % at loading is achievable with proper screening. Fines cause dust explosions, feed blockages, and incomplete combustion — this is a safety metric, not a cosmetic one.
How to use them
Compare offers on delivered cost per useful kWh, not per tonne. A cheap pellet with 12 % moisture and 3 % fines is frequently the most expensive option on the table.
