Industrial vs Residential Wood Pellets: What Differs
Industrial wood pellets and residential pellets differ in ash, feedstock, certification, packaging, and price. A clear comparison for procurement teams.
Buyers often ask for "wood pellets" as if it were one product. In trade terms there are two distinct markets with different specifications, different certification schemes, and price gaps of 30–50 %.
Feedstock
Residential pellets use virgin, debarked wood: sawdust, planer shavings, clean roundwood. Industrial pellets can legitimately include bark, forest residues, tops and branches, and short-rotation crops — all of which raise ash but lower cost.

Sustainability audit
Industrial buyers supplying regulated power markets usually require SBP (Sustainable Biomass Program) chain-of-custody plus greenhouse-gas data per tonne. Residential buyers rarely ask for more than ENplus and FSC/PEFC.
Which do you need
If the fuel goes into a domestic stove or a small pellet boiler, buy A1. If it feeds a grate boiler above roughly 1 MW with automated ash removal, industrial grade is cheaper per delivered kWh and perfectly suitable.
