Biomass Pellets for Power Plants: Fuel Spec Checklist
The fuel specification checklist utilities use when tendering biomass pellets: calorific value, ash chemistry, chlorine, fines, and sustainability documentation.
Power plant fuel buyers do not tender on price alone. A pellet that damages a superheater or slags a grate costs far more than the discount that won the contract. Here is the specification frame most utilities apply.
Energy and mass parameters
- Net calorific value as received: ≥ 16.5 MJ/kg (≈ 4.6 kWh/kg)
- Moisture: ≤ 10 %, with rejection above 12 %
- Bulk density: ≥ 600 kg/m³ — drives vessel and silo economics
- Mechanical durability: ≥ 97.5 % to survive multiple transfers
- Fines at discharge: ≤ 3 %, dust explosion risk above that
Ash chemistry, not just ash content
Two pellets at 2 % ash can behave completely differently. Utilities look at ash deformation temperature (ideally > 1,100 °C), plus potassium, sodium, chlorine, and sulphur, because these drive slagging, fouling and high-temperature corrosion.
Trace elements
Chlorine below 0.03 %, sulphur below 0.04 %, and controlled heavy metals are typical thresholds. Bark-rich feedstock raises all three, which is why pure stemwood commands a premium even in industrial grades.
Documentation
Expect to provide SBP certification, chain-of-custody, GHG lifecycle data, and independent inspection certificates (moisture, NCV, ash, fines) issued at load port by SGS, Bureau Veritas, or equivalent.
Contracting
Utility contracts are usually multi-year with quarterly volume nominations and price adjustment clauses tied to calorific value. Get the analysis basis — as received, dry, or dry ash-free — written into the contract before signing.
