FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) are the two globally recognised sustainable forestry schemes. Both cover wood pellets through chain-of-custody certification.
What FSC certifies
Not the tree itself, but the traceable chain from the forest to the finished pellet bag. Every step in the supply chain — forest, sawmill, pellet mill, trader — must hold a valid FSC CoC certificate for the final product to carry the FSC label.
Why it matters to importers
EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), UK Timber Regulation, and US Lacey Act all demand documented legality. FSC/PEFC certificates dramatically reduce the compliance burden and are increasingly required by public-sector and utility buyers.
How to verify
Every certificate has a unique code (e.g. FSC-C012345). Look it up in the FSC or PEFC public database before signing — expired or suspended certificates are the #1 reason certified claims fail audit.
